CMI is seeking an Advisor for its activities in the South Caucasus as part of its Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia (EECCA) programme

CMI (Crisis Management Initiative) is an independent, non-governmental organisation that works to resolve conflicts and build sustainable peace across the globe. CMI contributes to conflict resolution through mediation, mediation support, dialogue and capacity-building processes. The organisation has offices in Helsinki and Brussels (www.cmi.fi).

CMI has three regional focus areas, Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia region, Middle East and Northern Africa region as well as Sub-Saharan Africa region. CMI is now recruiting an Advisor position for its EECCA operations (Transdniestrian conflict settlement, Ukraine and South Caucasus) with a specific focus on activities in the South Caucasus region.

As part of its specific engagement in the South Caucasus, focused on dialogue, capacity-building and mediation support, CMI is currently looking for a part-time Project Adviser. This position will have an advising role in designing and implementing CMI activities in the region with the following responsibilities:

  • Contributing to the development, design and oversight of CMI’s projects in the region – with a particular focus on the South Caucasus;

  • Maintaining, managing and developing relationships with relevant donors, officials, institutions and partner organisations in the South Caucasus region, Eastern Europe and abroad – the capacity to manage and develop EECCA network in the US (Washington DC) will be considered an advantage;

  • Managing and/or advising on possible new initiatives in the South Caucasus region, especially related to confidence building and peace process support;

  • Representing CMI at relevant events and meetings in South Caucasus and relevant capitals in the region and abroad.

The ideal candidate will meet the following criteria:

  • Fluent in written and spoken Russian and English. Knowledge of other languages of the EECCA will be an asset; (Please note that fluency in written and spoken Russian is a prerequisite – candidates with beginner or intermediate level will not be considered);

  • Strong practitioner background with minimum 10 years of experience in political analysis, conflict resolution, peace mediation and/or track 1 confidence-building, previous experience with multilateral organisations at mission or HQ level (EU, OSCE, UN) will be an asset;

  • Master's degree or equivalent from a relevant field (e.g. conflict resolution, international relations, law, peace studies, political science, development);

  • Deep understanding of the political, cultural context and the peace processes in the EECCA region and South Caucasus region in particular, familiarity with public communication/media monitoring in this space will be an asset;

  • Comprehensive understanding of the modus operandi of international organisations and international actors active in mediation/peace process support in the region;

  • Excellent writing and analytical skills; prior research or reporting experience an asset;

  • Have very good communication and interpersonal skills, ability to work in teams and develop effective working relationships with conflict sensitivity and respect for diversity;

  • Be a highly proficient user of virtual communication tools to maintain daily working contact with a team and stakeholders based in multiple locations and time zones;

  • Excellent planning skills, creativity, conflict sensitivity and good political judgement;

  • Flexible, happy to work in a dynamic environment and able to remain calm under pressure;

  • Commitment to the CMI principle of neutrality. The position will be part time with a flexible and negotiable first duty arrangement. Frequent travel will be required.
